Samsung Galaxy S7 to launch in three variants on February 20: Reports

Rumors around the Galaxy S7 are picking up pace, and reports suggest that Samsung might unveil its flagship smartphone on February 20. Reports also suggest that the company could unveil the device in three variants differentiated by their size.

While Samsung has yet to make an official announcement, the folks at SamMobile report that the company might be hosting its Unpacked event on February 20 ahead of MWC. Last year, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge around the same time.

After receiving their report, GSMArena claims that Samsung has decided to simplify its lineup to make it easier for customers to choose the device that suits them best.

The standard version of Galaxy S7 will pack a 5.1-inch display and won't have a curved edition. On the other hand, the Galaxy S7 edge will sport a larger 5.5-inch curved display, but a flat variant won't be available.

Thirdly, Samsung Galaxy S7 Plus will boast a huge 6-inch display and will be available in two versions: flat and curved. In fact, the Galaxy S7 Plus will be the only one to come in two variations.

As for the design, the Galaxy S7 and its variants will look similar to this year’s Galaxy S6.But features that will differentiate the forthcoming smartphone include 3D-Touch like display technology, a microSD card slot.

The video mentions a few rumored hardware specifications as well. Here the Galaxy S7 edge gets a QHD display, a 4GB of RAM, a Snapdragon 820 or Exynos 8890 processor (depending on region), a 12-megapixel BRITECELL primary camera, an 8-megapixel ISOCELL shooter in front, a USB-C port and a fingerprint reader. It comes in gold, rose gold, silver or black.

Samsung launched the Galaxy A3, Galaxy A5 and the Galaxy A7 in India earlier this year. Now a series of leaks suggest that Samsung is almost ready with the second-generation variants of these smartphones.

Samsung’s Galaxy A-series of smartphones featured a metal frame, and glass back, and the next-generation smartphones too are carrying forward this design language. There are however small changes to bring the overall look in line with recent flagship smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 5.

The Galaxy A5 (2016) is expected to feature a 5.2-inch 1080p (Full HD) display, 1.6GHz Exynos 7 octa-core chipset paired with Mali-T720 GPU and 2GB of RAM. It is also expected to come with 16GB internal storage, microSD card slot, 13-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel selfie camera, and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

In comparison, the Galaxy A5 launched earlier this year featured a 5-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, 1.2GHz Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage, 13-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel selfie camera, 2,300mAh battery, and 4G LTE connectivity.

The Galaxy A7 (2016), on the other hand, is expected to feature a 5.5-inch 1080p (Full HD) Super AMOLED display, 1.5GHz Snapdragon 615 quad-core chipset, Adreno 405 GPU and 3GB of RAM. It is also likely to come with 16GB internal storage, microSD card slot, 13-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel selfie camera, and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

In comparison, the first-gen Galaxy A7 featured a 5.5-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, Snapdragon 615 chipset, 2GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage, microSD card slot, 13-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel selfie camera, 2,600mAh battery, and 4G LTE connectivity.

For a device that’s supposed to be more than six months away, the Galaxy S7 – codenamed Project Lucky – has started leaking out rather early. We gave you exclusive details on the next Galaxy S flagship earlier this month, and the S7 was found on the Geekbench benchmark database with a few of its hardware specs listed for all to see. The model we saw on Geekbench back then carried the LTE tag in its codename and was using 4GB of RAM, and now, yet another “project lucky” Samsung device has appeared online, this time with 3GB of RAM and without the LTE tag.

Now, at first glance this might suggest that Samsung will be launching two different models, but at this stage of development, it’s highly likely these are simply different prototypes. Back in 2014 we saw the Galaxy S5 come out with lower amount of RAM than the Galaxy Note 3 that came out before it, but with Samsung’s new found focus on offering the best on all its flagships, there’s very little chance of the company releasing a variant of the S7 with 3GB of RAM.

Again, at such an early stage we can’t really say for sure what Samsung will be doing with its next big thing. As we talked about in our exclusive, the Korean giant could be launching a Galaxy S7 variant with the Snapdragon 820, at least for the US market, and the phone could also feature a new 20-megapixel camera sensor, something called the “all lens cover”, and possibly a microSD slot for storage expansion.

Project Lucky internally since the number 7 is universally regarded as a lucky number.

A new report out of Korea claims that the Galaxy S7 could come with a dual-camera setup, this isn’t really a new concept because HTC tried to push a dual-camera setup with the HTC One M8 but it didn’t really do wonders for sales of the company’s flagship device. Perhaps Samsung believes that it has cracked the proverbial code and can do a much better implementation of dual-camera technology on the Galaxy S7. It’s also claimed in the report that the Galaxy S7 is going to have a 5.7-inch display, a big bump up from the 5.1-inch display on the existing flagship, the possibility has been reiterated by a previous report as well.
