Last
week, we reported about Reliance Communications’ (RCom) plans to launch 4G
services in the first week of July. Almost on cue, RCom’s has
today started rolling out its 4G services. A quick look at the company’s website
shows the process for existing RCom subscribers to upgrade to 4G. Those
upgrading have also been promised 10GB of 4G data for free.
Reliance
Communications' CDMA customers in Mumbai, Delhi, Maharasthra and Andhra Pradesh
circles, who had chosen to upgrade their services, will get the telco's 4G
services from Friday under its spectrum sharing agreement with Reliance Jio
Infocomm.
During
the initial phase, RCom's 4G will be rolled out in 12 circles — Mumbai,
Delhi, Kolkata, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, UP East and West,
Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar.
The
country's fourth largest telco is using the Jio's network to offer 4G services
in the country under the spectrum sharing agreement. The telecom operator is
currently awaiting final approval from the telecom department of Tamil Nadu,
Kerala, Karnataka and Rajasthan to launch 4G services in these circles, where
it expects to launch by mid-July, but only after DoT's approval. The company
has plans to offer 4G services using Jio's data network on a pan-India basis by
mid-August.
How to
upgrade
If you
are a postpaid or prepaid user, you can head over to the nearest Reliance Store
to collect a 4G SIM card. After collecting one, you will first need to send an
SMS from your existing SIM card to 1299. The message should read — 4G <
space >19 digit SIM number of the new SIM card. Alternatively, one can also
call on 1299 from the existing number and type in the 19-digit 4G SIM number.
If you
are using a Reliance Datacard, you can collect a new 4G SIM card from the
nearest Reliance Store. Once collected, you will need to head over to the RCom
site to fill an upgrade form, and after submission, a new 4G-capable dongle
will be delivered to your doorsteps.
Freebies
and plans
RCom
users who are opting for an upgrade are entitled to free 10GB of 4G data a
period of one month. The inaugural offer also includes 150 minutes of local and
STD calls for a period of 30 days. Users will only need to pay Rs 93 or Rs 97,
depending upon their circle.
Post the
offer, RCom's prepaid 1GB 4G data pack is priced at Rs 252, which is slightly
cheaper than a similar plan from Bharti Airtel and Vodafone India which costs a
user Rs 255 for a similar amount of data. However, RCom is charging Rs 449 for
a 2GB 4G data pack, against Rs 455 from Airtel and Vodafone's similar pack.
RCom's postpaid plans are priced higher when compared with plans from incumbent
telcos.
