Lenovo Z1 with Cyanogen OS coming to India in May

Lenovo Zuk Z1

The Lenovo Z1 will launch in India this May, kickstarting a completely new vertical for the Chinese smartphone major. The Lenovo Z1 is the first device by ZUK, a new business vertical created from within the company to focus on more innovative devices that push the boundaries for hardware and software. It will coexist with the Vibe and Moto ranges from the company.

Given that the brand Lenovo has pretty good visibility in India, it would be reasonable to assume that the company wants to cash in on it. Online-only brand ZUK, if you recall, was anyway aimed at countering the rise of other Chinese Internet brands like Xiaomi and OnePlus.

So the Lenovo Z1, or the Lenovo ZUK Z1 as it is known in other parts of the world, will come with Cyanogen OS 12.1 offering customisations as well as the ability to root and flash the phone. The phone has taken its time coming to India, so it sports an older Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor.

Lenovo is planning to bring in only the 64GB version to India. The phone also has a USB Type-C slot for charging and data transfer. The other unique feature is the 4100 mAh battery. Lenovo claims the battery will last long as it cuts down on unnecessary charge cycles by switching to DC power when the battery touches 100 per cent.

The rear camera is 13MP, while the front camera is 5MP. The Full HD display will come with a lot of customisations, thanks to the Cyanogen OS. The fingerprint scanner on the Z1 supports 360 degree recognition.

The Lenovo ZUK Z1 is priced around $350 in other markets, but could have a mid-range price tag of around Rs 15,000 in India. The final price is expected to be announced around the launch date in the second week of May.
