Xiaomi Redmi 3s, Redmi 3s Prime launched in India: Price, specifications and features


Xiaomi on Wednesday, as expected, unveiled its new Redmi 3S smartphone in India, alongside the Redmi 3S Prime variant. The new Redmi 3S smartphones are 'Made in India' devices, says Xiaomi.
Xiaomi Redmi 3S has been priced at Rs. 6,999 while Redmi 3S Prime will retail at Rs. 8,999. Both models will be initially available exclusively via Mi.com and Flipkart. Out of the two, the Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime will go on sale first starting August 9. Xiaomi says the Redmi 3S model will go on sale a week later.

The Redmi 3s is an indicator of how far we have come with affordable smartphones. Unlike the plastic phones of the yore, the Redmi 3s has an all metal unibody design, quite reminiscent of the Redmi Note 3. In terms of design, the phone has rounded edges and corners, which can make it a little slippery to handle. Barring that, the Redmi 3s offers a very premium design at an affordable price point.

It comes in two variants – a 16GB version that comes with 2GB of RAM but no fingerprint sensor and a 32GB version that comes with 3GB of RAM as well as a fingerprint sensor, which is called the Redmi 3s Prime.

Apart from the differences in the RAM, internal storage and the presence of fingerprint scanner, both the Redmi 3s variants are the same. 

The Redmi 3S and Redmi 3S Prime pack the an all-new octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor clocked at 1.1GHz clubbed with Adreno 505 GPU. The Chinese company claimed that the Redmi 3S and Redmi 3S Prime are the first smartphones featuring the new Snapdragon 430 chipset. The phones feature a 5-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) IPS display. 

The smartphones support expandable storage via microSD card (up to 128GB). The dual-SIM handsets (Micro + Nano) come with hybrid SIM slots which means the second slot also acts as a microSD slot.

In a photography, 13-megapixel rear camera with PDAF, f/2.0 aperture, HDR mode, 1080p video recording, and LED flash. The handsets also pack a 5-megapixel front camera with 1080p video recording capability.

Connectivity options on the handsets include 4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS/ A-GPS, Bluetooth, Glonass, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, and Micro-USB. The handsets are backed by a 4100mAh battery just like the original Redmi 3. It's run on Android Marshmallow 6.0 wrapped MIUI 7.5.
