Reliance Jio has announced today that the the network has created a world record by crossing 16 million in total subscribers during the first month of operations. Reliance Jio rolled out its full 4G services to the public on September 5, and became open to most smartphone brands that the SIMs were not compatible with during the Preview Offer. According to the company, it has created a world record, which is not only faster than other telecom operators, but also faster than Facebook, WhatsApp and Skype.
Mr. Mukesh D. Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Industries Limited, said, “We are delighted and humbled by the overwhelming response across India to the Jio Welcome Offer. Jio is built to empower every Indian with the power of data. We are delighted that people have recognized this and are utilizing our services to the fullest. We are customer-obsessed and committed to improve every day to exceed expectations of our customers.”
Users can get a Reliance Jio SIM card with the ‘Welcome Offer’, that allows users access to free unlimited 4G data until December 31. This data however, has a cap of 4GB of data a day – beyond which a user will get 128Kbps. Other benefits of the Jio SIM include free voice calling, and no roaming charges forever.
Jio customers will also be able to enjoy access to Jio’s premium apps like JioMusic, MyJio, JioChat, JioMoney and more for free until December 31. Mukesh Ambani has claimed that Jio’s data plans are the cheapest in the world at Rs 50/GB.
Reliance has introduced a paper-less Aadhaar card based Jio SIM activation method across 3,100 towns and cities. Customers using this method will get their SIM activated within minutes, just by giving their Aadhaar card number.
After the end of ‘Welcome Offer’ users need to opt for prepaid or postpaid plans starting January 1 2017. Reliance Jio has announced a wide range of plans starting at Rs 19 per day, Rs 148 for 28 days and goes all the way up to Rs 4,999 for 28 days. All plans carry benefits such as unlimited local and national calls ad unlimited SMS. The only changes in all plans come in the form of data benefits. The Rs 149 plan gives you 300MB of data, and 700MB of JioNet WiFi hotspot data. The Rs 499 plan gives you 4GB data + 8GB JioNet WiFi data, Rs 999 plan gives you 10GB mobile data and 20GB JioNet WiFi data, whereas the highest plan of Rs 4,999 gives you 75GB of mobile data and 150GB JioNet WiFi data. All plans also offer ‘night unlimited’ downloads from 2AM to 5AM.
Having said that, Reliance Jio is currently battling incumbent telecom operators over points of interconnect. Jio claims that existing telecom operators aren’t offering enough interconnect points, resulting in more than 16 million failed calls on a daily basis. The telecom operators, in their defence, said that their networks aren’t equipped to handle ”tsunami” of free traffic coming from Jio.
What’s more; soon after a number of users have joined the network, the speed has drastically come down from 20Mbps to somewhere close to 2Mbps. This 2Mbps speed on a wired line broadband is enough to stream a 360p video on YouTube, but on a Reliance Jio connection, even a 144p video buffers. It will be interesting to see how Reliance Jio optimizes its network to offer high-speed internet access that it claims. A recent Ookla’s speedtest report also shows that Reliance Jio’s 4G internet speeds are declining as more users have come aboard.
Reliance Jio is currently offering an additional 12 months of Jio Digital Services with the purchase of all Apple iPhone models. Unlike the Airtel offer that is limited to iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, Jio’s complementary services will also be extended to the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone SE as well.
