Apple iPhone 8 ‘frequent’ leaks are hurting sales: CEO Tim Cook

Leaks around an upcoming iPhone is nothing new, and almost every day we come across a new rumor that ups the overall excitement levels. But not everyone is happy with such leaks, especially not Apple. At the just concluded earnings call, Apple reported a drop in iPhone sales, and CEO Tim Cook has traced this drop to frequent leaks on various news sites.

During the earnings call, Cook was quoted as saying, “…We’re seeing what we believe to be a pause in purchases on iPhone, which we believe are due to the earlier and much more frequent reports about future iPhones.” Though he wouldn’t go into more details, it is clear why Cook is so exasperated by iPhone 8 leaks.

No doubt, rumors play a part in potential buyers’ minds, especially since Apple follows an annual cycle for launches. Looking at the many rumors, buyers are likely to hold off on buying a phone until a new iPhone is launched. Similarly, rumors hinting at modest upgrades, could mean that buyers hold off for another year to upgrade or simply switch to an Android phone.

Almost every day, we come across a new leak or rumor that paints an interesting picture of the upcoming iPhone 8. With Apple celebrating the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, this year’s iPhone 8 is expected to be radically different. If all the rumors are to be believed, the iPhone 8 will boast a glass sandwich design, an OLED display with near-invisible bezels, and a fingerprint sensor that is embedded under the front screen. Some of the expected features include wireless charging, better water and dust resistance, and a new dual-camera setup with AR capabilities.

Interestingly, a Business Insider report claims that the Apple iPhone 8 could be delayed until sometime next year. According to the research note, “several supply chain reports have suggested that key component shortages and technical challenges could delay the release of a high-end iPhone 8 device this fall.” While it is too early to comment on whether the iPhone 8 is actually delayed, this is not the first time we have come across such claims.

During the earnings call, Cook also revealed that Apple had sold 50.8 million iPhones, which fell short of the 52 million units expected earlier. That said, Apple did mention ‘double digit’ growth in India, and also set a ‘March record.’ Unsurprisingly, Cook was bullish about Apple’s prospects in India, saying, “We’re optimistic about our future in this remarkable country with its very large, young, tech-savvy population, fast-growing economy and proving 4G network infrastructure.”
