Snapdeal
is adding support for 11 regional languages on its platform. Starting today,
Snapdeal will be accessible in English, Hindi and Telugu, while support for
other languages will be added next month on Republic Day.
In time
for India’s Republic Day on 26th
January 2016, Snapdeal will be available in English and in 11 different
regional languages – Hindi, Telugu, Gujarati,
Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Assamese and Punjabi.
With
this, Snapdeal expects to reach to an additional 130 Million smartphone users
in India, who use internet in regional languages.
Commenting
on the launch, Rohit Bansal, Co-Founder, Snapdeal said , "Less than 2% of
the Internet's content is available in Indian languages. It's such an acute
dilemma. Our decision to go multi-lingual is driven by the feedback that we
have received from our users."
Snapdeal's
Customer Care however would continue to offer language support in 5 languages
only. Seller experience and subsidiaries like FreeCharge and Shopo will have to
wait too.
"We'll
prioritize based on the data that we collect from consumer experience and
feedback. As new consumers join our portal, we'll roll out 12, and then 22
languages. Right now we're focused on the Jan 26th deadline", Anand
Chandrasekaran, Chief Product Officer, Snapdeal said.
“India’s linguistic diversity is a huge opportunity to expand the market
to include those users who would prefer to engage online in their native
languages. Our decision to go multi-lingual is driven by the feedback that we
have received from our users,” Rohit Bansal, co-founder,
Snapdeal said.
“We are sure this will enable
millions of new users to join the digital commerce revolution that is sweeping
across India. Snapdeal’s multi-lingual platform
will redefine the rules of the game and will allow sellers and buyers from all
across India to explore and transact without any constraints of language,” he added.
