All Nokia smartphones will receive Android Oreo update: HMD Global

HMD Global’s CPO Juho Sarvikas has confirmed via Twitter that the company will roll out the latest Android 8.0 Oreo update for its Nokia smartphones. These smartphones include the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6, and the recently launched Nokia 8. The Nokia 3, 5, and 6 all launched with Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box, while the Nokia 8 runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat.

While Sarvikas has confirmed Android Oreo for the Nokia smartphones, he didn’t provide a timeframe for the rollout. Google officially announced Android 8.0 Oreo just two weeks back with only the first batch of devices having received the update so far. Sarvikas’ confirmation is in line with an announcement made in June by an HMD Global spokesperson. In an interview with TechRadar, it was confirmed that the Nokia smartphones would received the Android O soon after its release. Even then the timeframe wasn’t mentioned.

Keeping in mind the usual cycle of major Android OS upgrades, it would probably take months for the Nokia smartphones to receive Android Oreo. However, HMD Global has been rolling out updates as promised for its Nokia smartphones this year. In the same Twitter thread, Sarvikas also confirmed Android 7.1.1 Nougat update for the Nokia 3, as promised. The update will be rolled out gradually, and will reach Nokia 3 users in the next few days.

With the Android 7.1.1 Nougat update, Nokia 3 users can expect features such as multi-window app support, power-saving ‘Doze’ feature, and background system updates. There’s also a new storage manager and image plus GIF support for the AOSP keyboard.

As for the Nokia smartphone series, Android Oreo will bring some new and interesting features. The notable ones include Picture-in-Picture mode, Notification Dots, Android Instant Apps, Google Play Protect, among others. Android Oreo also promises optimizations such as minimizing background activity in the apps least used, better connectivity, and a longer battery life.
