Apple iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus devices making ‘hissing’ sound while under heavy load

Apple started shipping the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus to pre-ordered customers and made it available in retail stores on Friday, and three days later, reports of a strange issue are coming in. Cheekily calling it 'noisegate', several users are reporting that their iPhone 7 Plus is making a weird hissing noise, especially under load. Some users indicate the issue extends to the iPhone 7 as well.

Some iPhone 7 users have noticed an odd hissing sound coming from their device while putting the new A10 Fusion processor to the test.

Stephen Hackett from 512 Pixels was the first to point out the strange sound coming out of his iPhone through a post on Twitter. After Heckett shared a tweet about the issue, several people confirmed hearing the distinct voice coming out of their iPhones, something that sounds like a hiss or whine.

👉 Put the back of the #iphone7 to ear and launch an app and you’ll hear the hiss/whine. Not sure if by design or defect. #buzzgate #hissgate

👉 Ran Geekbench on my iPhone 7 (3376 single core, 5340 multi, btw). It actually does make a “hissing” noise under full load.

Apple hasn’t officially acknowledged the issue yet, which has led to speculations regarding the hissy-whiny noise coming out of the iPhone 7.

Engadget postulates the noise as being some sort of coil noise, which is being created by the smartphone’s processor — the kinds a high-powered electronic part makes. The reason why the A10 processor is a suspect is because people have heard the noise being emanated from the general area where the smartphone’s processor sits. The noise is said to be quite like the sound coming out of a running computer, just that it’s a much mellow version of that. On the other hand, some people are also speculating the issue to possibly be a cooling down mechanism adopted by Apple, since it happens every time the processor is under load and has chances of heating up.

This may not really be a huge issue since many existing smartphone too make some negligible noise when under heavy load. However, it is not something you would expect from Apple and it is this aesthetics bit that seems to bother users. There may not be any way to fix this issue, since the unibody of the Apple iPhones would not really allow that. However, Stephen Hackett, who sort of broke the news about noise, got his iPhone replaced from an AppleCare store.

Of course, Apple told Hackett that his iPhone 7 Plus will get replaced with a new one as soon as possible.

While some doubt the processor and the cooling system of the iPhone, Apple Insider speculates that it “could involve the RF transmitter or some other form of interference with the speaker system.”

What’s surprising is that, after multiple teardowns of the new Apple iPhones, nobody pointed out the issue. Also, even though many till now have complained about the issue, there still hasn’t been a great majority reporting the same. And therefore, it isn’t clear if all Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are facing the issue, or if it is a ‘defect’ in only a bunch of the new iPhones.
