WhatsApp has consistently been adding new features to its iOS and Android apps. Recently, the company added the ability to create and send six second animated GIF videos. The feature allowed users to record a video or convert the existing ones in GIFs. Now, the latest beta version (2.16.264) of its Android app has been updated with two new features – selfie flash for capturing better photos in low light, and Snapchat-like feature to doodle on top of photos.
Today, there are a handful of selfie-centric smartphones that come with a high-resolution front-facing camera along with LED flash. However, the same cannot be said about most smartphones. The new feature lets you capture brighter selfies in the dark using WhatsApp’s built-in camera interface. To use the feature, tap on the camera icon besides the typing box and switch to the front-facing sensor. You will see the flash icon on the left, which you can tap to turn it on or off. When turned on and clicking a selfie, the display lights up to illuminate the user’s face.
The second feature is Snapchat-like doodle option that lets you draw on top of photos, as well as big emoji icons, stickers and include text overlays as well. However, this feature only works when you use the built-in camera of WhatsApp, and not when you share photos with users using the attachment button from the top.
To use this feature, just tap on the camera icon besides the text box, and above the shutter release button, you will find a strip of thumbnails. These are the recent photos from the gallery, which you can choose to attach. Upon choosing one, the top right corner of the photo window will show you the pencil option (drawing tool), the add text option, add emoji, crop tool and undo button. When you tap on the pen icon, there is a thin bar underneath that lets you choose the color for drawing. Just hold it down on the screen and start scribbling. For now, the feature is in beta and is expected to rollout to public version in a few weeks.
Among other changes, WhatsApp had also recently added voicemail feature to the platform that lets you send a voice mail to recipient if the call is unanswered or rejected. The company had also added a quote feature similar to Twitter, allowing users to reply to messages with quoted text. WhatsApp is just getting better with every new update.
