Samsung Galaxy Note 7 shipments delayed due to quality issues

The Galaxy Note 7 has been touted as one of the most premium and among the best devices Samsung has created so far, and it is little wonder that demand for the phablet is far outpacing production. But it seems like the wait for the device is set get longer as shipments of the Galaxy Note 7 have reportedly been delayed. The suspension comes after a few incidents were reported in South Korea, and Samsung is in the process of conducting quality control tests. It isn’t clear at the moment what aspects Samsung is testing.

The Korea Herald claims that Samsung has delayed shipments after incidents of the Galaxy Note 7′s battery exploding were reported in South Korea. It further states that Samsung has stopped shipping the phablet out to those who had pre-ordered it before. There is currently no word on how this affects Samsung’s plans for shipping the phablet in other countries. In India, Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 7 with a price tag of Rs 59,900, and is scheduled to go on sale from September 2.

“Shipments of the Galaxy Note 7 are being delayed due to additional tests being conducted for product quality,” Samsung told Reuters.

Comparatively, Apple faced plenty of criticism for its Antennagate (iPhone 4) and Bendgate (iPhone 6) quality issues in the past, but the company did not halt shipments at any point, even as it worked to resolve the problems.

This is not the first time we have come across reports of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 being affected by performance issues. Many users online are reporting about the Exynos-powered variant crashing and there doesn’t seem to be any set pattern or reason. A crash renders the phablet unusable and a factory reset or wiping the device’s cache doesn’t help either.

The Galaxy Note 7 is protected by Corning’s latest Gorilla Glass 5, which is supposed to be near impossible to scratch or crack. Yet a couple of scratch tests online prove that the phablet’s display is prone to scratching at surprisingly low levels of pressure. The Galaxy Note 7 is also bested by last year’s Apple iPhone 6s in real-world app speed tests. To put this into perspective, Samsung‘s phablet is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 64-bit chipset or an Exynos 8890 64-bit octa-core processor depending upon the region. Both processors are paired with 4GB of RAM. Apple‘s smartphone, on the other hand, is powered by a A9 64-bit dual-core processor paired with 2GB of RAM.

Then there were reports of cases where the Galaxy Note 7 units caught fire due to the battery exploding. Samsung has reportedly acquired those units and is looking into the cause of those incidents.

On the other hand, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge have done really well, and have helped boost Samsung’s position as the market leader. The Galaxy Note 7 was expected to further solidify the company’s position, and at least the early signs looked good. But buyer complaints and quality control tests will delay the shipments and put a dent on the sales numbers. Last year, a delay in procuring enough curved displays for the Galaxy S6 edge similarly affected the numbers, and Samsung will be hoping to avoid a repeat.
