Google Allo now supports Hindi inputs for Assistant, Smart Reply, Company Says the Highest Number of Allo App Users Are in India

Google, as promised, has started rolling out Hindi Assistant to its Allo instant messaging app in India. To recall, Google at its Make for India event in September had promised that Allo will receive Hindi Assistant later this year.

Apart from Hindi Assistant, Google's Allo app will now be able to include "Smart Reply" in Hindi language as well, with the help of machine learning. Google says that the new features will begin rolling out on Google Allo for Android and iOS users from Monday, and will be available on all devices over the "coming few days". The new feature is focused on bringing the non-English speakers online.

To start using the Assistant in Hindi, just type ‘Talk to me in Hindi’ or adjust the language setting on your device. Therefore, with the new update, if you start chatting in Hindi, the ‘Smart Reply’ will show suggestions in that particular language. “Since it’s launch, Google Allo has received tremendous response, especially in India, which has one of the highest number of Google Allo users. The Google Assistant, in particular, is one of the most loved features in Google Allo – one in every 12 messages in group chats are messages to the Google Assistant. We are enthused by this and today’s launch enables us to extend these features to the next millions of users in a language of their choice.” Amit Fulay, Group Product Manager of Google said.

Unveiled at I/O 2016 earlier this year, Google Allo is a smart messaging app with AI integration, and features like WhisperShout, Ink, end-to-end encryption, and incognito mode among others. While chatting, the AI monitors the topic of conversation and suggests replies that can be sent with just a tap. Google claims that the app’s image recognition system is 90 percent accurate.

Over the past year and a half, Google has witnessed 10 times growth in local language queries in India, with Hindi content consumption five times faster than English content. And it makes perfect sense for the company to bring Hindi Language support to its advanced AI-based assistant.

Talking about other India specific rollouts, a couple of months ago, Google introduced handwriting input tool and Hindi language support to Google Translate, and more recently updated the app to add more support to the language. Targeting the huge Indian population, Google also extended this support for the language to its Search, Chrome and has also added Hindi UI to Android Jelly Bean. Google also added this input tool to Chrome as an extension, to allow a user to add Hindi script to any site.
