Reliance Jio Infocomm on Tuesday said that it has partnered with Niantic, the company that has published and developed the augmented reality game Pokemon GO in association with The Pokemon Company, to launch Pokemon GO in India.
The partnership will enable Jio SIM customers to download and play Pokemon GO without incurring data charges till March 31, 2017 as part of Jio's Happy New Year Offer.
This association will also make Reliance Digital Stores and Jio retail locations and charging stations into 'PokeStops' or 'Gyms' in the Pokemon GO game beginning Wednesday, December 14, 2016.
"Our partnership with Niantic helps our customers to enjoy content on Jio's mobile broadband network," Mathew Oommen, President?, Reliance Jio, said in a statement.
On JioChat, Pokémon GO players will also get access to an exclusive channel, called Pokémon GO Channel. This channel will help players interact with others and share tips or tricks, and also take part in contests and special events.
“We are delighted to partner with Jio to launch Pokémon GO in India,” John Hanke, CEO and founder of Niantic said. “It’s exciting to see Pokémon fans in India step out and explore their neighborhoods in search of Pokémon and Jio’s disruptive high speed 4G LTE Network will be an excellent way to experience the game.”
It remains to be seen what sort of buzz Pokémon GO is able to create now that it is officially launched in India. But with most of us having already played the game, it seems to be a case of too little too late. It will also be interesting to see just how well the AR mobile game works on a network that is plagued with slow speeds and inconsistent connectivity. Pokémon GO will debut on the Google Play Store and App Store in India tomorrow.
