Samsung Galaxy Note 8 could skip in-screen fingerprint reader due to ‘technical limitations’

We more or less now know that Samsung’s Note series is making a comeback, sort of. While the Galaxy Note 8 is speculated to launch in late August, rumors and leaks have continued to pour in, giving us a rough idea of what to expect from the smartphone.  One of the top rumors so far has been the integration of the fingerprint scanner into the display of the Note 8. Interestingly, the company was supposed to have the feature on the Galaxy S8 but later went ahead with the fingerprint reader on the back. The odd placement of the fingerprint reader on Galaxy S8, however, was widely criticized. Now, new rumors suggest the Note 8 will also skip the in-screen fingerprint scanner.

A representative of the Seoul-based original equipment manufacturer (OEM) told Naver that Samsung will opt out of integrating the fingerprint reader into the display in its upcoming flagship phablet. Some of the issues that the company seems to face are security concerns along with some “technical limitations.” It is worth mentioning here that Samsung has reportedly invested a lot of money to develop the technology.

The company planned to launch the in-screen fingerprint reader technology with the Galaxy S8 itself but, due to the feature being technologically incomplete, Samsung abandoned the technology at that time  However, the report further states that even Apple is facing similar problems in using this technology for the iPhone 8, which is expected to go on sale later this year.

Believing the report that Samsung Galaxy Note 8 won’t ship with the under-screen fingerprint scanner, we can expect the device to either ship with a physical Home button with an integrated fingerprint reader or a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, just like it did with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus.

Rumors from the past hint that the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 might come with a larger 6.3-inch display than the Galaxy Note 7. It is also rumored the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will come with Galaxy S8-like Infinity Display. Apart from that, the device might come with the dual curved display with a slim top and bottom bezels and home and power buttons are missing from the sides. Considering dual cameras are the latest trend in the market Samsung might launch the Note 8 with a vertical dual camera set-up on the back, as suggested in the renders before.

In terms of specifications, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will be powered by the new Snapdragon 835 SoC under the hood, paired with 6GB RAM and internal storage expandable up to 256GB. The smartphone is also said to come with Bixby button on the side of the smartphone.
