This year marks the 10th anniversary of Apple’s iPhone, and the iPhone 8 is highly expected to be an anniversary edition with some really interesting features. The smartphone is rumored to come with an end-to-end OLED display and a possible Touch ID sensor embedded underneath display. Apple won’t stray far from its tradition though, as it is also rumored to launch the natural successors iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus. A new report now suggests that the iPhone 7s Plus will be ‘waterproof’ and have wireless charging capabilities.
The latest information comes from Robert Hwang, CEO of Wistron, which is one of Apple’s iPhone assemblers. Hwang was quoted by Nikkei Asian Review as saying that the new iPhone could come with a 5.5-inch flat display. According to him, the smartphone will be waterproof and have wireless charging capabilities. Although the report doesn’t specify that it is the iPhone 7s Plus, it does say that Apple is working on another iPhone with 4.7-inch flat display and ‘a premium version with a slightly curved screen’. This clearly points out to the iPhone 7s Plus being the smartphone in question.

Hwang further said that the assembly process for iPhones haven’t changed much over the years but with waterproof and wireless charging features the iPhone 7s Plus would require different testing and, it may alter the assembly process in some way.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus already have IP67 rating for water resistance, but the iPhone 7s Plus could possibly come with IP68 rating. Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ come with IP68 rating which allows the smartphones to be immersed in water up to a depth of 1.5 metres for duration of 30 minutes. It also protects the smartphones against dust ingress. IP68 rating on the iPhone 7s Plus would mean a better form of water and dust resistance as compared to the iPhone 7 series.

Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had earlier predicted that all three iPhones this year will come with wireless charging capabilities. This goes in line with constant reports about Apple going back to glass backs for the iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s and the iPhone 8 to include wireless charging capabilities. Though there’s uncertainity over Apple’s tech for the wireless charging. According to rumors, the company may either go for a long-range wireless charger or the conventional inductive one.
