Vivo could be the first to launch smartphone with under display fingerprint sensor

While 2017 is clearly the year of bezel-less and edge-to-edge stretched displays, another major tech advancement lurking in the shadows is the much-rumored on-screen fingerprint scanner. While the likes of Apple iPhone 8 and Samsung Galaxy Note 8 are widely believed to be launching with this tech onboard, there could be another smartphone that might pip them. A report now suggests that Chinese manufacturer Vivo is likely to launch a smartphone with fingerprint sensor integrated into the display.

According to Android Authority, researcher Jiutang Pan who closely studies mobile supply chain in China, says that Vivo might have found a way around the required technology to integrate fingerprint sensor into the display. What’s more, the Chinese manufacturer is likely to achieve this feat ahead of the likes of Samsung and Apple. Also, the Chinese manufacturer might launch a smartphone with the technology in place in a couple of months from now.

Pan also shared a video on Weibo that showcases the feature in action. However, it still remains doubtful if users will be able to unlock the device by placing the finger anywhere on the display or a specific area. Also, a report from Korea claims that other Chinese manufacturers including Xiaomi and Huawei might also launch smartphones with on-screen fingerprint sensor. Huawei P11, which is said to launch in the year 2018, could sport the on-screen sensor.

Apple iPhone 8 rumors have so far suggested that the Cupertino giant is facing difficulties in bringing the in-display sensor. While an Apple patent that surfaced last week suggest the company might relocate the Touch ID sensor to the power button. The company was heard of earlier planning to move the fingerprint scanner to the rear panel but apparently, the news was not well received by Apple fans.

As far as Samsung is concerned, the company attempted and reportedly failed in putting the in-screen sensor on the Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphones. Soon after, rumor related to Samsung Galaxy Note 8 surfaced and it was said that the company has not given up on its aims of in-screen sensor. It is said the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 which is expected to go on floors later this year might feature on-screen fingerprint scanner.
