Man skips out death after the charging cable of his iPhone caused severe burns to his neck

Here’s another case of personal tech turning harmful. 32-year-old Wiley Day had an extremely bad morning when he woke up being electrocuted by his charging iPhone. “I just thought that’s how you die,” Day said.

Day fell asleep with his iPhone charging via an extension cord next to him in bed. When he woke up, he discovered his dog-tag necklace entangled in a space that had emerged between the extension cord and the charger. And that contact between the charger and his dog-tag jolted him to the floor by the force of electricity. Fortunately, Day was able to break the chain off his neck in time. After a doctor’s visit it was found that Wiley Day suffered third degree burns around his neck and on his hands.

In an interview with Washington Post, Day said it was the “the eeriest, darkest, most demonic thing you could ever experience.” Day told the Post that after his experience became public, he heard from many concerned people. “I found out most people were using extension cords because they were still on their devices in bed,” he said. “I mean, it’s sad but true.”

Day also put up a Facebook post where he thanked his stars to have survived the incident. He said his pain was “only about a 2, but I don’t know what’s to come…Im happy to be a miracle, but most happy to be an example for those who were unaware of the dangers of charging electronics while sleeping!”

Sadly, the frequency in occurrence of such events has been seen increasing. There have been multiple instances recorded where a smartphone caught fire and caused injury to the user, sometime while these smartphones were plugged on charge, and in some cases, for no visible cause.

Just a couple of weeks ago, an Australian woman suffered some serious burns across her face, hand and neck due to her battery-operated headphones catching fire. The explosion took place on a flight from Beijing to Melbourne.
