Microsoft has announced a big consumer product launch event on May 2, ahead of its three-day Build 2017 developer’s conference, which kicks off on May 10 in Seattle. The company sent out media invites for the event in New York, and the only hint it gives is the tagline — “Learn what’s next. #MicrosoftEDU.” The event is set to kick off at 9:30AM EST or 7:00PM IST.
When you think of Microsoft hardware, you picture a new Surface device. The company has been widely rumored to be working on new Surface tablets, as well as Surface-branded smartphones too. But The Verge confirms that this event won’t see any kind of new Surface launch. Instead, if we were to hazard a guess, it will be a product launch that will be focused on education and learning.
Lately, Microsoft has been rumored to be working on Surface Pro 5, Surface Book, and even the long-rumored Surface phone. But these devices are unlikely to see the light of the day anytime soon. What seems highly likely to launch is Windows 10 Cloud, which will be Microsoft’s take on Google Chrome OS. Microsoft’s focus towards education aimed products and services comes from Google’s Chromebooks, which have emerged a major player in the educational market. Per reports, Google has taken over 51 percent share in US educational product market.

Speaking of hardware, Microsoft could also give a glimpse at the Xbox Project Scorpio. The next-generation console is expected to feature eight custom x86 cores clocked at 2.3GHz, 40 customized Radeon compute units running at 1172MHz, 12GB of GDDR5 memory, a 1TB hard drive, 4K UHD Blu-ray optical drive and a memory bandwidth of 326GB/s.
