Nokia 9 leak hints at OZO Audio 3D audio technology, iris scanner, QHD OLED display

HMD Global announced a host of Nokia devices – Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 at MWC 2017. The one device missing from this list though was a flagship-level smartphone. Nokia 9 has in recent times been established as this missing flagship, and there have been multiple leaks surrounding the design and specifications of the upcoming smartphone.

According to a report by Nokia Power User (NPU), Nokia 9 will be the first smartphone to feature Nokia OZO Audio technology. Announced in the early days of March, OZO Technology aims at improving audio experience on smartphones, and brings 3D audio to devices. Compatible with smartphones sporting three microphones or above, it can capture Spatial 360 audio. For devices with two microphones, spatial audio can be captured. The 3D audio experience is compatible with headphones as well as VR headsets. Nokia OZO Audio encourages the passage of sound in one direction, reducing ambient noise.

HMD Global is supposedly considering an iris scanner for the Nokia 9 as well. The feature will lend an added layer of security. Presently, Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are users’ favorite phones with iris scanners. The home button will pack a fingerprint scanner. Nokia 9, expected to launch towards the end of 2017, is expected to be slightly different from the present Nokia line in terms of looks. Concept images have suggested a more rectangular block design with a flat back. However, design leaks by Nokibar on Weibo suggest a back and design similar to Microsoft Lumia smartphones of the past. Sketches by Nokibar reveal Nokia 9 will come with a home button below the display flanked by capacitive buttons on either side. On the back of the device is a dual-camera with Carl Zeiss optics.

Nokia 9 specifications and features

On the specifications front, Nokia 9 will reportedly feature a 5.5-inch QHD OLED display, and run on Android Nougat 7.1 out-of-the-box. The latest Snapdragon 835 processor will power the device. 22-megapixel Carl Zeiss optics for the rear end camera will be paired with a 12-megapixel front shooter. The battery is 3,500mAh. Nokia 9 will be a water-resistant phone with IP68 rating. There are expected to be two internal memory variants – 64GB and 128GB with 6GB RAM.

HMD Global has met much success with their Nokia branded smartphones in China, where the devices are presently up for sale. Nokia 3 and Nokia 5 will go on sale in other markets in Q2 2017. The smartphones are budget devices and take on the present slew of Chinese smartphones in the market. Nokia has had a loyal following in India and HMD Global plans on aggressively capturing the market. “By June, these products will be launched globally and India will serve as a key market for us again. Our attempt is to source 100 per cent from the country because of tax benefits,” Ajey Mehta, Vice President-India for HMD Global India Ltd., told IANS.
