Apple cuts USB-C adapter prices up to 53% in response to MacBook Pro complaints

After the MacBook Pro was launched last week, a lot of users went bonkers complaining about the inconvenient USB Type-C port situation. The new MacBook Pro only has the USB-C (or Thunderbolt 3 ports), and majority of the peripherals people use today will need adapters to work. To add to that, Apple doesn’t even bundle the USB Type-C adapter along the laptop. Now, addressing the complaints, Apple has announced that it is temporarily lowering the price of USB Type-C accessories by up to 53 percent in the US. This includes third-party peripherals, adapters and cables.

Apple released a statement explaining the price cut, “we recognize that many users, especially pros, rely on legacy connectors to get work done today and they face a transition. We want to help them move to the latest technology and peripherals, as well as accelerate the growth of this new ecosystem. Through the end of the year, we are reducing prices on all USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 peripherals we sell, as well as the prices on Apple’s USB-C adapters and cables.”

Starting immediately, all of Apple’s USB Type-C adapters and some of its USB Type-C cables will have their prices cut between $6 and $20. The USB Type-C to traditional USB adapter is down from $19 (approximately Rs 1,700) to $9 (approximately Rs 650), the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter down from $49 (approximately Rs 3,300) to $29 (approximately Rs 2,000), whereas the USB Type-C to Lightning cable (1 meter) is down from $25 (approximately Rs 1,700) to $19 (approximately Rs 1,300). Also, the USB Type-C to Lightning cable (2 meters) is down from $35 (approximately Rs 2,350) to $29 (approximately Rs 1,950), the Multiport adapter with HDMI, USB, and USB-C is down from $69 (approximately Rs 4,600) to $49 (approximately Rs 3,300), whereas the Multiport adapter with VGA, USB, and USB-C from $69 (approximately Rs 4,650) to $49 (approximately Rs 3,300).

Only USB-C charging cables aren’t being discounted. Apple is also cutting prices by up to 25 percent on all third-party USB-C peripherals that it sells. SanDisk’s USB-C SD card reader is getting a slightly steeper discount, from $49 (approximately Rs 3,300) to $29 (approximately Rs 1,950). While the above discount is applicable in the US, there is no word on whether or not the same is applicable in India. However, with the new MacBook Pros set to launch in India soon, we won’t be surprised if the USB Type-C accessories see the price cut here too.
