After a month long spree of ongoing rumors, Xiaomi finally unveiled the Redmi 4 smartphone in China yesterday. Alongside, the company also launched the Redmi 4A smartphone. The company also launched the Redmi 4 Prime variant - aka the Redmi 4 Pro Edition. The Redmi 4A is the cheapest among the Redmi 4 series, priced at RMB 499, which translates to approximately Rs 5,000. The Redmi 4 Prime is priced at RMB 899, which is about Rs 9,000, and the Redmi 4 was unveiled at RMB 699 which is approximately Rs 7,000.
The devices might make it to India in December 2016. Xiaomi's one of the biggest market outside China is India and they got the Redmi 3 series to India within one month of its China launch. Something similar can be expected with the new Redmi 4 devices as well.
The Redmi 4A variant, even though the cheapest, features a premium looking metal body. It features a 5-inch IPS screen with 720p resolution. It is powered by Snapdragon 425 chipset with a quad-core 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 processor, and Adreno 308 GPU, which is accompanied by 2GB of RAM. The Redmi 4A has 16GB expandable storage via a hybrid dual-SIM slot.
On the photography front, the Redmi 4A comes with 13-megapixel primary camera, accompanied by a single LED flash. On the front, it sports a 5-megapixel camera.
Connectivity options include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS/ A-GPS, and Bluetooth v4.1. Sensors on board the Redmi 4A include accelerometer, ambient light, gyroscope, infrared, and proximity. There is no fingerprint scanner on the Redmi 4A. It is fuelled by a 3,120mAh battery. The smartphone run on MIUI 8 based on Android Marshmallow. The smartphone will come in a gold and a rose gold colour.
Redmi 4 Prime specification and features
The Redmi 4 Prime is essentially the highest variant of the three smartphones. As compared to the Redmi 4, it features double the storage with 32GB onboard, and comes with 3GB of RAM. Other than that, the Redmi 4 Prime features a 5-inch IPS display with 1080p resolution. Under the hood, it is powered by a Snapdragon 625 chipset with an octa-core 2.0GHz Cortex-A53 processor and Adreno 506 GPU. The Redmi 4 Prime sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with a dual-tone dual-LED flash and a 5-megapixel front camera.
It is fuelled by a 4,100mAh battery, and has features like dual-SIM card slots, 4G with VoLTE support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS for connectivity. The smartphone also comes with a fingerprint scanner.
Like mentioned earlier, the Redmi 4A and Redmi 4 Prime are essentially two variants of the Redmi 4. Other than the processor, RAM and storage, the two Redmi 4 variants share most of the specifications and features.
Redmi 4 specification and features
The Redmi 4 was unveiled with 5-inch full HD (1920×1080 pixels) with 2.5D curved glass IPS display, and a microSD card slot to expand the onboard storage up to 128GB.
In the photography department, the Redmi 4 sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and phase detection auto-focus (PDAF support). On the front, there is a 5-megapixel selfie camera. The smartphone is backed by a 4,100mAh battery.
The Redmi 4 has a fingerprint scanner placed at the back, just below the primary camera. The usual connectivity options are present like dual-SIM card slots, 4G with VoLTE support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. On the software front, the device runs on Android Marshmallow wrapped under MIUI 8 out-of-the-box.
