Samsung Galaxy S8 could look a lot like Xiaomi Mi MIX with bezel-less display

The Galaxy Note 7 was a bust, and Samsung has a lot riding on its next flagship phone launching in 2017 – Galaxy S8, which is not expected to feature a little to no bezel design. The company plans to improve its tarnished image with the new device that is expected to launch in February next year.

Samsung has already promised that the Galaxy S8 will feature “slick design”, "Advance AI" and "improved camera”. Adding to that, a new report suggests that the Galaxy S8 will go big on display taking up more than 90 percent space.

According to a report by TheInvestor, Samsung will be bringing an edge-to-edge or a bezel-less display that will be based on OLED technology. Park Won-sang, a principal engineer at Samsung’s display making unit has hinted that the phone will be coming with a 90 per cent display area ratio. In comparison, the average ratio of display to body ratios in modern day smartphone stands at 80 per cent.

The Galaxy S8 is already rumored to feature a 5.5-inch 4K panel with dual-curved edges and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The smartphone is also expected to come with an optical fingerprint sensor and ditch the physical home button. The latest report about bezel-less and edge-to-edge display for the Galaxy S8 actually complement its previous leaks and rumors. Even though Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything, we can definitely expect big developments on the Galaxy S8’s display.

With dual cameras becoming a huge trend this year, the bezel-less display seems to be the next in line. Xiaomi has already stepped foot on this journey as it recently unveiled its concept smartphone the Mi MIX. The smartphone features a 6.4-inch near bezel-less OLED display with screen-to-body ratio of 91.3 percent. Joining them, if rumors are to be believed, would be Apple with its next generation iPhone 8. Apple is reportedly planning to ditch the existing LTPS panel with OLED panels. A concept image was also made for the iPhone 8 which showed the smartphone sporting a full screen curved OLED display.

According to the latest rumors and leaks, one of the Galaxy S8 variants is expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 830 SoC paired with 6GB of RAM. The other Galaxy S8 variant is expected to be powered by Samsung’s Exynos 8895 SoC paired with 8GB RAM. Samsung could join the dual cameras trend as the Galaxy S8 is expected to feature dual rear cameras, which is likely to be engineered by SEMCO. The dual cameras could be a pair of 16-megapixels and 8-megapixels snappers. Other than that, the smartphone could be backed by a 4,200mAh battery, feature an iris scanner, wireless and rapid charging, and built-in mini projector.

The Galaxy S8 is also expected to come with S-Pen support and Galaxy S7-like water and dust resistance capabilities. In addition to the “slick design” and “improved camera”, it was also announced that the Galaxy S8 will come with “an enhanced artificial-intelligence service”. This clearly hints at the Viv AI assistant created by Viv Labs which will most likely debut on the Galaxy S8. Samsung had acquired Viv Labs, the company behind Apple’s Siri and Viv Ai is poised to function better than Siri.

From what we’ve seen so far, the Galaxy S8 will be one smartphone to look out for. Considering how the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge is one Samsung’s best smartphones, the high expectations from the Galaxy S8 is naturally inevitable. There is also a good amount of pressure on Samsung to make the tables turn with the Galaxy S8 as the aftermath the Galaxy Note 7 has caused will be tough to fix.
