Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor is faster, more power efficient launched at CES 2017


Qualcomm has officially unveiled its Snapdragon 835 chipset at CES 2017 today. Though there’s no announcement around supported devices yet, Qualcomm has mentioned that commercial devices running on Snapdragon 835 will be available in the first half of 2017 and we can expect this year’s upcoming flagship devices to launch with Qualcomm’s new chipset on board.

Unlike the quad-core Snapdragon 820/821, the new chipset features an octa-core Kryo 280, while continuing to use a big.LITTLE architecture. This allows four high performance cores to be clocked at up to 2.45GHz, while the other four “Efficiency Cluster” cores can be clocked at up to 1.9GHz. One of the notable aspects of the new Snapdragon 835 chipset is that Qualcomm has adopted the 10nm manufacturing process as compared to the 14nm process earlier, which should improve both performance and power consumption.

As far as performance is concerned, Qualcomm is promising 27 percent boost in performance, while at the same time there is 40 percent less power usage when compared to the Snapdragon 820. As for GPU, the Adreno 540 onboard supports  4K@60fps displays, and offers 25 percent faster graphics rendering than last year’s chipset. The new chipset is also compatible with Google’s Daydream platform.

Another notable feature of the new Snapdragon 835 SoC is Quick Charge 4.0. With support for this feature, batteries on devices will be able to offer up to five hours worth of battery life with five minutes of charging. Along with support for USB Type-C, Qualcomm says Quick Charge 4.0 promises 20 percent faster charging, and up to 30 percent higher efficiency.

For connectivity, the Snapdragon 835 is integrated with Snapdragon X16 LTE modem, and supports 4X carrier aggregation, 4×4 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, and Wi-Fi 802.11ad. There are also enhancements on the photography side with an integrated Qualcomm Spectra 180 camera ISP. This features support for up to 32-megapixel single or dual 16-megapixel dual-cameras, and offers optical zoom capabilities, fast auto-focus, and HDR.

On the security side of things, Qualcomm’s Haven security platform provides support for fingerprint, retina and face-based biometrics. There is also support for Google’s TensorFlow and enhancements to Hexagon DSP, which allows for on-device machine learnings tasks, like object and voice recognition, hand tracking, and biometric authentication.

In a nutshell, when compared to Snapdragon 820, the Snapdragon 835 SoC offers 27 percent higher processing performance, 40 percent enhancement in power consumption, 25 percent boost in graphics performance and charges the battery 20 percent faster. It is also among the first SoCs to offer 802.11ad Wi-Fi connectivity. The Snapdragon 835 SoC is also suited for VR headsets and ODG’s R-8 will be the first VR headset to use it.
