Reports suggest that for the Galaxy S8, Samsung is allegedly working on an 8-megapixel front-facing camera with encoder type auto-focus actuator, instead of the usual VCM type, which would allow for a slimmer AF module. Typically, the front-facing cameras feature a fixed focus, and the auto-focus feature has been reserved for the rear cameras up till now. The Galaxy S8 however won’t be the first smartphone to feature an auto-focus front camera. In the past, HTC Desire 826, Sony Xperia C4, Samsung Galaxy A7 (2016), HTC Desire Eye, and Sony Xperia XA have featured the same too.
Again, this isn’t the first leak that suggests Samsung working on the auto-focus feature on Galaxy S8’s front camera. Late last year, As Sammobile reported, Samsung had filed a patent application with the European Union Intellectual Property Office Samsung for a new term called, ‘Smart AF’. The application reveals that the trademark will be associated with every product from mobile phones, smartphones and tablet computers. This was believed to be a patent for the front camera auto-focus.
In addition to the details about the auto-focus feature, we have come across reports claiming that the Galaxy S8 could take advantage of Snapdragon’s clear sight technology to bring dual-camera setup. It is likely to be home grown and engineered by SEMCO. Some reports hint at dual-camera setup including 16-megapixel camera with RGB (color) sensor, and 8-megapixel camera with a monochrome sensor, just like we’ve seen on smartphones like the Honor 8, Huawei Mate 9, Mate 9 Porsche Design special edition and Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus.
As for the hardware, Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S8 with a choice of two processors. Depending upon the region, the Galaxy S8 could either be powered by an Exynos 8895 chipset paired with Mali-G71 GPU, or Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 SoC. The Exynos chipset is said to offer up to 1.8 times more graphics performance than the Galaxy S7. The Snapdragon 835 chipset, on the other hand, is said to offer up to 27 percent better performance than its predecessor, while being more power efficient.
These processors on the Galaxy S8 are expected to be accompanied with either 6GB of RAM, or a whopping 8GB of RAM. There have been recent reports suggesting that Samsung had started mass production of 8GB RAMs, and it would certainly be a part of a short list of smartphones with this amount of RAM. As for storage options, the flagship smartphone is expected to be available in 128GB and 256GB variants. Like last year, Samsung could opt for a hybrid setup to give users the option to either use one SIM card and a microSD card, or two SIM cards.
