Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch to launch in India on January 10; Price, Specs and features

After announcing the Galaxy Gear S3 smartwatch at IFA 2016 in Berlin last year, Samsung is all set to bring the Tizen OS-based smartwatch to Indian shores. The company has sent out media invites for the launch event on January 10 in New Delhi. The invite features Gear S3 sketches in background and the text that reads, “Samsung invites you to an evening of celebrating timeless style which is innovative, personal and eternal. An experience like never before awaits you!”

The Gear S3 is offered in two variants – Classic and Frontier. The Gear S3 Classic comes with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, whereas there ‘Frontier’ version supports LTE, along with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Successor to the Gear S2, the Gear S3 comes with a circular bezel, which can be used to navigate through the menu, installed apps, accepting or rejecting calls, and more. Besides the option of having LTE connectivity, the Gear S3 also comes with built-in GPS, NFC for mobile payments and easy pairing, IP68 certification for water and dust resistance, and a built-in speaker to make and receive phone calls.

Prices of the Gear S3 start at $349, which is approximately Rs 23,800, but there is no word on the India pricing yet.

Samsung Gear S3 Specifications and Features

The smartwatch features a 1.3-inch super AMOLED full circular display running at a resolution of 360×360pixels (278 dpi). It supports 16 million colors, along with ‘Always On Display’ feature to show time and notification counts. While the Gear S3 Classic is designed for refined appearance, the ‘Frontier’ is a rugged version. Samsung has added Corning Gorilla Glass SR+ protection, and it is military-grade durable, which means the Gear S3 Frontier could be able to withstand accidental damage, and would also be able to survive high and low temperatures. It can even operate at altitudes of up to 15,000 feet.

Powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor, the smartwatch is paired with 768MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. The addition of Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity option means your Gear S3 doesn’t need to be connected to smartphone via Bluetooth for receiving app notifications and updates. Fuelled by a 380mAh battery, a power saver mode is also included to further extend the battery life. Samsung claims that the Gear S3 can last for up to four days on a single charge. The Gear S3 also supports Barometer, GPS tracking, speedometer, and SOS option. You can triple-tap on the screen to activate SOS feature, which will notify your friends and family if you’re in an emergency.
