CES 2017: Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom with iPhone 7 Plus-like dual-cameras, 5,000mAh battery launched

Asus today launched the next-generation ZenFone 3 Zoom at its ‘Zennovation’ press conference at CES 2017 in Las Vegas. The new smartphone is the successor to last year’s Zenfone Zoom, and as the name suggests, the highlight of the device is its photography chops.

As is becoming a trend among smartphone companies these days, the new ZenFone 3 Zoom too boasts a dual-camera setup at the back. The setup on the new smartphone seems clearly inspired by the Apple iPhone 7 Plus. The ZenFone 3 Zoom features a pair of 12-megapixel sensors — one with a 25mm wide-angle lens, and one with a 56mm lens to offer 2.3x optical zoom.

The cameras are accompanied by two Sony IMX362 sensors with 1.4-micron pixels for good photography in low light. There is also support for f/1.7 aperture, and 4K video recording capabilities. There is also support for three-axis EIS, four-axis OIS, and three auto-focus modes — Dual Pixel, continuous AF and laser. Not surprisingly, there is an iPhone 7 Plus-like Portrait Mode, which will click photos with blurred out background. There is also support for RAW photo format, which will be added via a software update later.

Asus ZenFone 3 specifications and features

As far as the rest of the specifications are concerned, the ZenFone 3 Zoom flaunts a 5.5-inch full HD (1080p) display protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5. Under the hood is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 processor.

Another talking point of the smartphone is a massive 5,000mAh battery underneath. Asus claims that the battery is good enough for 6.4 hours of 4K video, and survive 40 days on standby mode. On the software front, it runs on Android Marshmallow out-of-the-box, but it will soon be updated to Android Nougat.

Impressively, Asus has also managed to keep the phone at only 7.83mm thick, weighing 170 grams. The rest of the specifications and features are currently under the wraps. Asus says that the smartphone will be launched sometime in February.
