Facebook starts testing Snapchat Stories-like feature for News Feed

Behold the mimeograph Facebook is drawing. After Instagram, WhatsApp, and the Messenger, Facebook is now testing Snapchat Stories-clone feature to Facebook’s New Feed as well. Clearly, it looks like Facebook doesn’t know where to draw the line! While there is no news on when and if at all the feature will be rolled out globally, Facebook has been expanding its test to include more countries, reported The Next Web.

If the first words out of your mouth after reading the update was a yelling “What” or a disappointed “Facebook too?”, you are not the only one to react like that to the update. As much as the Snapchat and Instagram Stories are loved, Facebook is now just pushing it with the WhatsApp Stories status, Messenger Day and now evidently the Facebook Stories feature. And the social media agrees with us.

A week ago, Facebook rolled out the Messenger Day feature on its instant messaging platform, which is also of course inspired from Snapchat’s Stories. The feature essentially develops on the the recently added in-built camera into the Messenger. Uptil now the camera allowed users to click, edit and share images and videos only with their friends on their contact list, with this feature users will now be able to set these images or videos as their Stories, or as Facebook calls the feature ‘My Day’.

Essentially, when you launch the Messenger app, you’d see the camera option at the bottom of the screen. Tap on that, click an image or record a video, add the filters you want, doodle whatever, once you are done, you select the right arrow there. Now where the recipient list shows up, right above the camera roll option, (after the update) you will now see a ‘My Day’ option, which is basically the stories feature. Presumingly if the Facebook Stories becomes a global feature, it would work similarly.

The Messenger Day feature works exactly like Snapchat or Instagram Stories; a user can upload these posts, which will be visible to all the friends on their Messenger list for 24 hours, after which it will automatically disappear. Although users can also select from their friend list the people they want or do not want to see their My Day stories. Additionally, while users can not add effects to these pictures on similar to Snapchat and Instagram, they can still add filters, emoticons, stickers, text and doodle over these posts. Facebook also allows users to upload an image shared on a chat on Messenger directly to the My Day stories.

Besides, recently Facebook-owned WhatsApp also adopted the Snapchat Stories feature, to replace its own text status updates. However, presumingly due to the criticism, the latest WhatsApp Beta update showed that the instant messaging platform is bringing back the old text status update as well.
