At its Unpacked 2017 event, Samsung not only ‘officially’ revealed the Galaxy S8 lineup, but also introduced some cool accessories to make the flagship smartphones even more desirable. Amongst others, the Dex Station garnered the most interest from the user community. The Frisbee-shaped dock essentially allows you to connect the new Galaxy S8 smartphones to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse set, and use it like a full-fledged desktop. Today, Samsung revealed more details on the DeX Station.
It is currently listed on the official product page with a price tag of $149.99 (approximately Rs 9,730). It will start shipping in late April, around the same time as the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ hit will the shelves. It is already available for pre-order on the Samsung website and eligible for financing with the purchase of the two smartphones.

The Dex Station comes equipped with two USB-A 2.0 ports, a LAN Ethernet port, an HDMI output, and a USB-C charging port. Other than being a docking station to convert the smartphone into offering a desktop PC experience, the DeX Station also charges the Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+, while its built-in fans keep the device cool during extended usage in PC mode.
In order to use the smartphones for PC experience, all you need to do is dock the Galaxy S8 into the DeX Station. This will launch a special DeX mode on the connected peripherals where the apps can be opened in multiple separate windows for more ease-of-use. As of now, only the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are compatible with the docking station, but we could hope for future compatibility with more devices.
The idea behind an accessory like the DeX Station arises out of the growing trend of working on-the-go. Right now, one can download work-related apps on a smartphone, work on them at convenience, and open their web-based versions to continue working on a particular project. As noted during Samsung’s presentation, the DeX Station makes this entire process a lot easier and seamless. The concept is clearly inspired by Microsoft’s Continnum for Windows which allows users to work across compatible devices with a seamless, adaptive interface.
