Mark Zuckerberg will get his Harvard degree after dropping out 12 years ago

Mark Zuckerberg is set to get his college degree 12 years after he dropped out of Harvard. A post on Harvard’s website announced that Zuckerberg will give a commencement speech on May 25. The Facebook CEO also announced this on his own by posting a video with Bill Gates asking him tips for writing his commencement speech.

“Mark Zuckerberg’s leadership has profoundly altered the nature of social engagement worldwide. Few inventions in modern times can rival Facebook in its far-reaching impact on how people around the globe interact with one another,” Harvard President Drew Faust wrote on the college’s website. “And few individuals can rival Mark Zuckerberg in his drive to change our world through the innovative use of technology, as well as his commitment to advance science, enhance education, and expand opportunity through the pursuit of philanthropy.”

Back in 2005, Zuckerberg dropped out of his undergraduate computer science program to pursue full-time development of facebook.com. While returning to his college a few months later to recruit students for his company, Zuckerberg was quoted by The Harvard Crimson saying, “I’m not coming back.” With his company now valued in excess of $400 billion, it’s hardly surprising why Zuckerberg chose his passion over completing his education degree.

Zuckerberg is among the famous dropouts who left college to pursue their dreams, and suffice to say they succeeded. Other such notable dignitaries include Microsoft’s Bill Gates, and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs to name a few.

In the video with Gates, Zuckerberg asks him for tips on writing his speech. He also says how he was present when Gates gave his own commencement speech about 10 years ago when his wife Priscilla Chan graduated.
