Samsung store catches fire ahead of Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ launch

It’s quite clear by now that Samsung has the worst of lucks when it comes to fire. Where Samsung has done everything to escape from the shadows of the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, the demons of fire seem to be following it till now. Just hours ahead of the launch of Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ today, a Samsung store in Singapore has caught fire.

A Samsung Experience store in Singapore caught fire, which caused neighboring shops in the mall to close temporarily for safety and cleaning, CNET reports. Samsung also confirmed the event by issuing a statement on the incident. “We were alerted to a fire at the Samsung Experience Store at AMK Hub in the early hours of Tuesday morning before store opening hours,” the statement said. “The fire was extinguished by water sprinklers in the store and no one was injured during the incident. We are currently assessing the property damage and working closely with the authorities to determine the cause of the fire.”

Probably, had it not been for Samsung’s recent history, this fire incident would have gone unnoticed. However, now even a spark associated with the brand or its product becomes big news. Just last month, a fire broke out at the Samsung SDI factory in Tianjin, China, where Samsung manufactures batteries. While Samsung confirmed that the fire was caught in discarded batteries, the issue became quite prominent, because this time, not only fire was involved, but there were batteries involved too.

Reuters had noted that the fire was caused by faulty lithium batteries that were being discarded along with other waste. Which means, these weren’t new manufactured batteries. Now in the statements, there was a slight discrepancy, while Samsung says the fire broke out not on the production line itself, but in a part of the facility used for waste, including faulty batteries, the local fire department, said that the fire was caused by batteries inside the facility.

While the past is constantly trying to catch up with Samsung, the company is making sure the dementors of Galaxy Note 7 do not suck the happiness out of its flagship Galaxy S8. Samsung is holding strict new quality assurance protocols, which include an 8-point battery safety check that will address safety of batteries right from component level to their assembly and shipment of devices. Others include a durability test, a visual inspection, and also an X-Ray test to look for abnormalities inside the batteries. Lastly, the company will also conduct a large scale charge and discharge tests.
