Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ to come with facial recognition: Report

Thanks to last week’s leaked hands-on images we know how the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will look. But as we inch closer to the official showcasing of the new flagship smartphones, more details are flowing in about specific features of the Galaxy S8. While it is now known that the upcoming smartphone will feature an iris scanner for biometric authentication, latest reports suggest that there are certain inaccuracies and speed issues with the sensor due to which Samsung is boosting the system by adding facial recognition in the mix.

Traditionally, Samsung has placed the fingerprint sensor embedded in the home button on the front. Based on the leaked images, it is certain that for the upcoming Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, Samsung has opted not only for a larger display size but also repositioned the fingerprint sensor to the rear panel, so as to make the smartphones more aesthetically pleasing. Now, according to a report on The Investor, one of the company officials has acknowledged that due to limitations with the iris scanner, facial recognition has been added to aid in faster and more accurate biometric authentication.“With a face scanner, it will take less than 0.01 seconds to unlock the phone,” the Samsung official was quoted as saying to the publication.

Interestingly, the US Patent and Trademark Office granted Apple a patent that describes the use of facial recognition technology that makes use of 3D mapping. It is speculated that this technology could make it to the next iPhone, dubbed iPhone 8. It has been widely rumored that the upcoming iPhone 8 and the Galaxy S8 will have a lot of features in common and the dropping of ‘edge’ branding for a ‘plus’ branding is already an indication of the two companies on their way releasing identical devices.

In one of the newest leaked renders, the size of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ is compared with other phones. The Galaxy S8 is expected to feature a 5.8-inch display while the Galaxy S8+ is likely to come with a 6.2-inch display. Based on the leaked schematics, the Galaxy S8 has the same width as the iPhone 7, with slightly more height. Interestingly, the iPhone features a 4.7-inch display. The Galaxy S8+, on the other hand, is the same size as the iPhone 7 Plus which has a 5.5-inch display.

For the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, Samsung is using Super AMOLED displays with narrow bezels. This year, the company is bringing its iconic spilling display technology to both the variants, without compromising on the device sleekness. Under the hood, it will come powered by the newest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, making them the first set of smartphones to run the advanced processor. There will be 4GB of RAM and up to 128GB of internal storage. A 12-megapixel dual-Pixel rear camera with LED flash will be placed at the rear while upfront, there will be an 8-megapixel auto-focus selfie camera.  Both the models will run Android 7.1 Nougat out-of-the-box with TouchWiz layered above.

Samsung will be hosting its Unpacked event on March 29 when it will be officially taking the wraps off its new Galaxy smartphones. It is expected that the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will come in three color choices of Black, Silver, and Violet and could retail in European markets at 799 Euros (approximately Rs 57,000), while the larger Galaxy S8+ will sell for 899 Euros (approximately Rs 63,400). It is further expected that pre-orders will start from April 10 with first global shipments beginning April 21.
