Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 could sport 93% screen-to-body ratio, fingerprint sensor inside display

Xiaomi took the bezel-less design for smartphones up a notch with its Mi MIX which was launched last year. Xiaomi’s Mi MIX sports a 6.4-inch display offering a screen-to-body ratio of 91.3 percent which makes the bezels too narrow to be noticed easily. Xiaomi recently confirmed that it would be working on the successor of the Mi MIX with the announcement of Philippe Starck designing it. He had designed the Mi MIX for Xiaomi last year. With all eyes set on the Mi MIX 2 yet again, rumors surrounding it suggested at a 100 percent screen-to body ratio. A new rumor, however, says that the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2’s display will account for 93 percent of the front panel.

This comes from a Chinese report which claims that Xiaomi will increase its game with the Mi MIX 2 sporting a display of 93 percent screen-to-body ratio. The report further says that the Mi MIX 2 will feature a curved AMOLED display and will also flaunt a ceramic body like the Mi MIX. An image is shared as well portraying the Mi MIX 2 with the truly bezel-less display. The smartphone is seen with no bezel at all on top, but with a layer of it below the display. The report suggests that Xiaomi will use ultrasonic fingerprint sensor for the Mi MIX 2 which will be strategically placed below the display, like the Mi 5s. The Mi MIX smartphone has its fingerprint sensor placed on the rear end. Additional information includes a yearend launch date for the Mi MIX 2 which would be around the same time as Apple’s iPhone 8.

Gizmochina, quoting a Chinese analyst, reveals that Mi Mix 2 would use the in-display fingerprint technology and would be launched sometime in the second half of this year. Apart from that, it is also said to have "a number of innovative features".

If Xiaomi is able to successfully deploy the in-display fingerprint sensor on Mi Mix 2, it would be the first to do so (given the expected launch on the phone is before September). Moreover, while the fingerprint sensor would be shifted to the front, there won't be any need for an iris scanner as well -- resulting in an overall decrease in size of the phone, while keeping its screen size unaltered.

The trend of bezel-less display took its roots last year, but this year seems to be the trademark for smartphone companies heading in this direction. LG launched its flagship smartphone the G6 at the recently concluded MWC 2017. The G6 sports a 5.7-inch QHD+ FullVision display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. LG’s latest UX is also designed in such a way as to make the best use out of its large display. Samsung’s upcoming flagship the Galaxy S8 is also possibly ditching the Home button and gunning for a really long display.

The Mi MIX 2 smartphone obviously did not escape rumors and there have been speculations about what to expect in terms of specifications and features. The Mi MIX 2 smartphone is expected to retain the 6.4-inch display size like its predecessor. The display on the Mi MIX 2 will however get support for 2K format as compared to the Mi MIX which sports a full HD display. For photography, the Mi MIX 2 is said to adopt the dual camera setup and its selfie camera could feature LED flash enabled telescopic camera. On the software front, the Mi MIX 2 is said to run on Android 7.0 Nougat with MIUI 9 layered above.
