Reliance Jio to take on Uber, Ola in India with App based Taxi: Report

Rumors suggesting that the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio was planning to foray into the taxi space with the launch of an app-based taxi service, Reliance Jio Cabs, have been denied in a series of tweets on the 'Flame of Truth' Twitter handle by Reliance Jio.

The company which started commercial operations on September 5 last year, has been offering free data and voice services to its over 100 million customers. The telco will start charging its customers starting April 1, 2017.

A report by FactorDaily had said that Jio had already ordered some 600 cars for its own fleet from makers such as Mahindra and Hyundai to kickstart the service. The service was likely to be launched in Bangalore and Chennai initially, followed by similar launch in Delhi and Mumbai. The first source said. “South India is a better market for to start. Slowly it will move on to north,” he added. The company will pursue a “mixed market strategy,” where in it not only goes after major cities but also smaller cities like Bhopal and Jaipur.
