Samsung is doing everything to ensure that a Galaxy Note 7-like scenario is never repeated. One of the ways is to look for other suppliers to source a critical component for its Galaxy S8. According to a report, Samsung is has approached Sony for batteries for its upcoming flagship smartphones.
Samsung SDI and Amperex are believed to be the two suppliers of batteries for the upcoming Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+. Now according to WSJ, Samsung is impressed with Sony’s lithium-ion battery packs and plans to use it on its flagship smartphones. This corroborates a previous rumor that all but confirmed that Samsung’s third-party battery supplier was a Japanese company. With Samsung in talks with Sony, it shows that the company plans on diversifying its battery supply chain and reduce the risk of any faults with future units.
Samsung has had a lifetime of battery-related woes last year. First the company unsuccessfully tried to replace these exploding phablets, but when the replacement units too caught fire, the Galaxy Note 7 was officially discontinued. The company then carried out extensive investigations, and recently revealed its findings. The issue was indeed battery-related, and to avoid a repeat, Samsung has said it will take precautionary steps for all its devices. These include an 8-point battery safety check and multi-layer safety measures.
