BHIM app finally available on iOS devices

After its successful launch on Android, the BHIM app has been finally launched on the iOS platform. The common UPI app is aimed at facilitating digital payments. With its debut on iOS, it is currently supporting over 35 banks, and available only in Hindi and English language. However, support for more banks and regional languages is likely to be added soon. Similar to the Android version, BHIM app on iOS also has per transaction limit of Rs 10,000 and per day transaction limit of Rs 20,000.

If you are an iOS user, you can head straight to the App Store and search for BHIM. It is to be noted that there are multiple apps which use the same logo, keyword, and hence, show up first in the results. Make sure you are installing the right BHIM – Bharat Interface for Money app by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The app size 9.8MB, so it is slightly heavier on your storage as compared to its Android version.

How it works

The iOS version of the BHIM app works in the same manner as the Android version. Once you download the app, choose your preferred language. Currently there is only Hindi and English options on iOS. Once you verify your phone number, you will be required to set up a passcode. Now you can select from the list of banks currently supported by the app.

The banks currently supported include Allahabad Bank, Andhra Bank, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Catholic Syrian Bank, Central Bank of India, City Union Bank , DCB Bank, Dena Bank, Federal Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, IDBI Bank, IDFC Bank, Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, IndusInd Bank, Karnataka Bank, Karur Vysya Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank , Oriental Bank of Commerce, Punjab National Bank, RBL Bank, South Indian Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, State Bank of India (SBI), Syndicate Bank, TJSB, UCO Bank, Union Bank of India, United Bank of India, Vijaya Bank, Yes Bank Ltd., and City Union Bank.

Once you select your preferred bank, it will ask you to choose from the accounts (in case you have multiple accounts in the same bank). You will be then required to set up a 4-digit UPI PIN. The app gives you three options – Send, Request, Scan & Pay.

With the Send option, you can transfer money to anyone with a mobile number (registered with the bank) or a UPI Payment Address (for example: rakeshm@xyzbank). You can also verify the existence of a specific payment address to ascertain you are sending the money to the right individual. You can now fill in the amount, enter your UPI PIN and hit send. You can further make request for money in the similar fashion. The payer will receive a notification with your virtual payment address (mobile-number@upi) and to authenticate the request, they will be required to log in to their mobile banking application. With the Scan & Pay option, you can scan QR codes and make payments.

BHIM app currently doesn’t allow multiple accounts to be operated simultaneously. In case you want to switch to a different bank account, go to Bank Accounts section – tap on the three dots on iOS (More) – choose Change Account. From here you can again select your preferred bank. Once you have set up your accounts on the BHIM app, it will not ask you again to set up the UPI passcode. So the next time you have to switch in between the bank accounts, simply choose change account and start transferring money.

In the coming weeks, the iOS version of BHIM app will also be updated with more features and support for languages. In comparison, the Android version comes with improved security settings with an option to disable the visibility of the mobile number in UPI address. It also offers the option to restore forgotten passcode and reverse a payment received.
