After the Nokia 6 success, HMD Global is set to launch a series of devices at the scheduled Nokia MWC 2017 event in Barcelona. HMD Global is all set to announce a slew of Android smartphones along with the highly-anticipated modern avatar of the ‘Nokia 3310’ at its event scheduled for 9.00PM IST. You can watch the live event on Nokia Mobile’s Facebook page or YouTube channel.
One of the posts on the company’s Facebook page asks users to vote for their favorite Nokia phone from the past and gives the option between Nokia 3310 and Nokia 3650. On the other hand, the YouTube channel has a video on the Nokia 3310, thus giving out a clear indication for the anticipated re-launch of the iconic feature phone.
It is expected that at today’s event, HMD Global will bring the first Nokia-branded Android smartphone – Nokia 6 – to the international markets. The Nokia 6 made its debut earlier this year but had been exclusive to China. Priced at 1,700Yuan (approximately Rs 16,500), the smartphone boasts mid-range specs which include a 5.5-inch full HD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB onboard storage, 16-megapixel/8-megapixel camera, 3,000mAh battery, and Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box.
Soon after the Nokia 6 was announced, the rumor mill went abuzz with speculations around the company’s projected line of Nokia-branded Android smartphones for 2017. There have been enough leaks and revelations about the upcoming Nokia phones which include three new phones other than the Nokia 6. Serial tipster Evan Blass put the rumor mill into gear by tweeting out that HMD Global will be announcing Nokia 8, Nokia 5, Nokia 3, and a handset which will be a tribute to the iconic Nokia 3310 from the early 2000s. These devices will run Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box.
Nokia 8 is expected to be a flagship Android smartphone with some top-end features. It is expected that the Nokia 8 will feature a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED bezel-less display offering QHD resolution. Under the hood, it is speculated to come powered with either Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 or Snapdragon 835 chipset. If it houses the latter, it will be the first smartphone to feature the advanced chipset which even Samsung is speculated to be using for its Galaxy S8. The Nokia 8 is expected to be available in two storage variants of 64GB and 128GB. For photography, it is expected to feature a 24-megapixel rear camera with Optical Image Stabilization along with a 12-megapixel front snapper for selfies and video calling.
By far, we only have rumors about the other Nokia-branded smartphones and based on those, the Nokia 5 is expected to feature a 5.2-inch HD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 12-megapixel rear camera. It is expected to cost slightly higher than the Nokia 3 at $200 (approximately Rs 13,500).
The Nokia 3, on the other hand, is expected to be a low-end entry level Android smartphone which could come with 5.2-inch HD (720p) display, 1.4GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor, 2GB of RAM, Adreno 308 GPU, 16GB onboard storage, 13-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel front camera. It is likely to priced around $150 (approximately Rs 10,000).
However, highlight of tonight’s event is the rumored launch of a new Nokia 3310. The iconic feature phone with its robust build and exceptional battery backup earned itself the title of ‘Chuck Norris of feature phones.’ Back in the 2000s, feature phones were still the trendiest to flaunt. Cut to 2017 and the market is flooded with touch-based smartphones. While people might have grown accustomed to the new way of smartphone technology, the legendary Nokia 3310 still has a trove of nostalgia around it. It will be interesting to witness how HMD Global adds the modern twist to the indestructible feature phone from 17 years ago.
