Moto G5, G5 Plus with Google Assistant launched at MWC 2017; coming to India in March


Lenovo-owned Motorola has launched the metal Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus at MWC 2017. The devices have got a much needed design refresh, with a metal chassis and a circular camera frame at the back.

Specifications also see a bump in many departments, while the price stays in the affordable range. The Moto G5 will start at EUR 199 (roughly Rs. 14,000) and the Moto G5 Plus will start at EUR 279 (roughly Rs. 15,300), and the two smartphones are expected to launch in India sometime in March.

The devices are expected to launch in various markets, with India being in the priority list. Motorola announced that India is on the second spot when it comes to market share, and rakes in about 10 percent of overall sales. Other international markets include the US, and UK as well. Both the smartphones come with fingerprint scanners in the front underneath the Home Button. 

Moto G5 Specifications and Features

The Moto G5 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC, along with 2/3/4GB of RAM (depending on what market you’re in), 16GB/32GB of internal storage and a 5-inch full-HD screen. The phone runs Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box, and also has support for external storage via microSD card. It also features a fingerprint sensor at the front, along with a 5-megapixel front camera and 13-megapixel rear camera.

Moto G5 Plus Specifications and Features

The Moto G5 Plus is notably better than the Moto G5 when it comes to specifications, with the phone powered by the excellent Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC. 

There is also 2/3/4GB of RAM (again, depending on the market), 32/64GB of internal storage, a 5.2-inch full-HD screen and Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box. The phone additionally supports microSD cards for storage expansion, along with a fingerprint sensor at the front embedded into the home button, as well as a 5-megapixel front camera and 12-megapixel rear camera.

What’s common to both smartphones is the fingerprint sensor at the front of the phone, along with Android Nougat 7.0 software. The Moto G5 has a 2800mAh removable battery, while the G5 Plus has a 3000mAh removable battery. Additionally, the Moto G5 Plus is compatible with Motorola’s TurboPower fast charging technology. Both phones support dual-SIM connectivity.

Additionally, a lot of Motorola’s popular features, including Moto Display and shake gestures, are available on the phones. Both phones will also be getting Google Assistant, a feature that was originally launched only for Google’s Pixel smartphones, but is expected to roll out widely on many phones this year. The phones will be available in fine gold and lunar gray color options, and are a marked departure from the typical Moto G-range look and feel.
