Google last week released its latest wearables platform Android Wear 2.0 along with the launch of LG Watch Style and LG Watch Sport. The next smartwatch in line to launch with Android Wear 2.0 out-of-the-box is being rumored to be the Huawei Watch 2. It had been speculated for quite some time that Huawei would be launching its next smartwatch at the MWC 2017 event. Now, Huawei has confirmed that the Huawei Watch 2 will indeed be unveiled at the forthcoming event.
The company’s VP Yu Chengdong posted an image on Weibo to tease the Huawei Watch 2. The post on Weibo, spotted by PlayfulDroid, contains an image with the phrase ‘Made for free spirits’ and shows a sprinter wearing the Huawei Watch 2 but there isn’t any close-up view of the smartwatch, unfortunately. The confirmation for the launch comes from hashtags made in the post, which mentions the Huawei Watch 2 and MWC 2017 as well. While there were no details revealed about the Huawei Watch 2, the post did mention that Huawei would be launching three versions of the company’s 10,000mAh power bank with fast charging support. Huawei will hold its MWC press event on February 26.
This smartwatch would be the next iteration of the Huawei Watch, which was launched at MWC 2015. The Huawei Watch 2 is expected to come with LTE compatibility, a feature which is already available in the international edition of the Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch. The Huawei Watch 2 running on Android Wear 2.0 will most likely have a 42mm diameter dial along with a display size of 1.4-inch. There could be two different straps for the smartwatch – one made of stainless steel and the other made of rubber.
In terms of design, the Huawei Watch 2 is expected to feature a sportier look as compared to its predecessor which has a more elegant look. Huawei will possibly release the Watch 2 in two variants with one of them coming with a built-in SIM card that will allow the device to work independently of the smartphone. The built-in LTE functionality enables data connections when the device is out of range of Wi-Fi networks or a paired smartphone to make or receive phone calls. There aren’t many details other than these about the Huawei Watch 2.
Google’s latest OS for wearables, Android Wear 2.0, brings in a slew of new and improved features. The update lets you personalize the on-watch face better with information and actions from preferred apps. It also allows users to access Uber app on the smartwatch and allow one to book a cab by tapping on the screen. Android Wear 2.0 has also integrated Google Play Store which allows users to download apps straight from the smartwatch. In addition to this, Google has also finally brought its AI-based Assistant to Android Wear 2.0.
