MWC 2017: BSNL to sign MoU with Nokia for 5G, Internet of Things applications

State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd is all set to sign a memorandum of understanding with Nokia in the areas of 5G and Internet of Things (IoT).

“After 4G, the future is 5G and IoT, which is useful in the concept such as smart cities… The MoU will help BSNL to draw a framework for transition from the current network to futuristic 5G network,” BSNL Chairman Anupam Shrivastava told PTI.

The MoU, scheduled to be signed tomorrow at the Mobile World Congress, entails strategic cooperation for smooth network evolution and transition from 4G to 5G. The pact also involves collaborative workshops to define a phased strategy for network evolution and transformation and the implications on business, technology and operations, he added. Nokia will also work with BSNL by sharing 5G technology concepts, new product launches and innovations available in the public domain that demonstrate possibilities of 5G, and IoT for the Indian market, Shrivastava pointed out.

MWC 2017: Reliance Jio, Samsung partners to upgrade current LTE network, 5G network to India

As promised, Reliance Jio today made its debut at the ongoing Mobile World Congress 2017. In a joint event with Samsung, the telecom company announced a collaboration with Samsung, to work on an ‘I&G (Infill & Growth) Project’. This joint project pushes the Indian government’s Digital India initiative with an aim to upgrade current LTE mobile communication services across India by expanding both the current network capacity as well as network coverage.

While India is still scuffling with the quality of 4G connectivity in many regions of the county, the project wants to bring 5G connectivity to all users in India. Samsung and Reliance Jio together plan to set high benchmark for LTE services in India through wider coverage, in-building penetration and the highest speeds, regardless of the user’s location.

“As Jio’s end-to-end LTE solutions partner, it is a great pleasure for Samsung to contribute to Jio’s tremendous success,” said Youngky Kim, President and Head of Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “The massive deployment of over a million cells across India is especially remarkable. We will strive to create new paradigms for LTE-Advanced Pro and 5G by closely cooperating with Jio as a unified workforce.”

Utilizing spectrum in the 850, 1800 and 2300MHz bands, the project intends to upgrade the existing LTE network to provide seamless coverage even in dense urban areas of the country. Also considering its current 100 million user base, project will also extend Jio’s reach in rural areas, covering over 90 percent of the population.

“We successfully achieved 100 million subscribers in 170 days, making us the fastest-growing company in the world, and the numbers continue to rapidly grow. It was possible because we introduced a truly effective LTE service, Pan-India. We are committed to bringing game-changing digital experiences to India with superior ecosystems, mobile content, all-IP networks and ongoing process innovations,” said Jyotindra Thacker, President of Reliance Jio Infocomm.

Samsung was one of Jio’s initial partners in India, and this partnership looks to make impact in the international markets as well. Back in 2012, the two companies signed an agreement covering the entire scope of network, ranging from equipment to establishment and maintenance services.

Further, standing in competition with the Samsung and Reliance Jio partnership is the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which is scheduled to be signed between state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Nokia. Similar to the I&G project, this partnership aims to work together in the areas of 5G connectivity and Internet of Things (IoT).

The phone runs Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box, and also has support for external storage via microSD card. It also features a fingerprint sensor at the front, along with a 5-megapixel front camera and 13-megapixel rear camera.

The Moto G5 Plus is notably better than the Moto G5 when it comes to specifications, with the phone powered by the excellent Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC.

There is also 2/3/4GB of RAM (again, depending on the market), 32/64GB of internal storage, a 5.2-inch full-HD screen and Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box. The phone additionally supports microSD cards for storage expansion, along with a fingerprint sensor at the front embedded into the home button, as well as a 5-megapixel front camera and 12-megapixel rear camera.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium with 4K HDR display, Snapdragon 835 SoC, IP68 water resistance, Xperia XZs, Xperia XA1 and Xperia XA1 Ultra launched at MWC 2017: Price, specifications and features

As expected, Sony has launched a slew of Xperia devices at MWC in Barcelona. The company has launched the Sony Xperia XA1, Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra smartphone, along with the XZ Premium and the Xperia XZs smartphones. The XZ Premium is a high-end variant of the XZ, while XZs is essentially a smaller variant. Similarly, the Xpera XA1 and Xperia XA1 Ultra are successors to the Xperia XA and Xperia XA Ultra smartphone launched last year.

Sony has also collaborated with Amazon to showcase a few of its shows in 4K HDR on the phone from Amazon Prime Video, so it’s fair to say that there will be actual content to use with the 4K HDR screen on the phone. Sony is notably touting the phone as the world’s first 4K HDR phone, but we have to consider the fact that all of those pixels on a phone with a 5.5-inch screen seems like overkill. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium has a pixel-per-inch count of over 800, which is far more than what’s needed for a sharp picture where you cannot spot the individual pixels.

That said, HDR capability on a phone is a great touch, and with more HDR content being made available, this is a good move by Sony. LG has also revealed HDR support on its G6 smartphone, so this is likely to be a new trend on flagship smartphones this year.

This means you can create videos by recording in 960 frames per second, providing Super slow motion video playback that is apparently four times slower than other smartphones in the market. The smartphone offers 32GB and 64GB of internal storage, which is expandable further via a microSD card slot (up to 256GB).

Sony takes on Apple AirPods, launches Xperia ‘Open Style’ concept earphones at MWC 2017

Sony today announced its next generation of Xperia smartphones and along with a slew of accessories including an Apple AirPod rival at the ongoing Mobile World Congress. Called Xperia Ear ‘Open-Style’, it is Sony’s new wireless smart earbud concept and is based on open-ear audio technology. It is a product out of Sony’s Future Lab Program, which means it is yet to be commercialized.

With a metallic body, the Xperia Ear Open Style concept features a loop like design by incorporating ‘open-ear’ stereo headphones for music and receiving notifications, without shunning off sounds around you. As Sony explains, the Xperia Ear Open Style concept earbuds use two spatial acoustic conductors and driver units which work together to transmit sounds directly to the ear canal. This unit is placed behind the ear, making the whole unit look a bit like some hearing aid.

As the product goes through more R&D and more prototypes are tested, it will be eventually powered by Sony Agent Technology which is the company’s in-house personal assistant that uses voice commands and head gestures for navigation and communication with the smart device. It will also offer support for the Google Assistant, given Sony uses the Android platform for its smartphones. Sony is also developing new features for the concept earbuds to help improve in-ear assistant capability. It will also be added with support for third-party apps and services.

For an example, when the product is commercialized, it will come with a new voice-chat service called ‘Anytime Talk’ that will allow users to instantly start a group conversation in real-time without searching through contacts or needing to dial, all by simply pressing a button or with a head movement. The beta version of this service will roll out for the first-generation Xperia Ear over the coming months.

With the new concept wireless earbuds, Sony is aiming to offer a different audio experience to compete with the Apple AirPods which also feature a wireless design and come with support for the digital assistant Siri. To recall, the AirPods, which made their debut alongside the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, have been designed for individual usage and can take voice commands to execute actions. It is worth mentioning that Apple received a lot of flak for the seemingly impractical design of the AirPods. Given their miniscule nature, many argued that the expensive pair of wireless earbuds (Rs 15,400) are prone to get misplaced.
